Parent and Teacher Notes

This experiment allows us to build our own wind turbine and observe all its parts up close. We find out how the motor inside the wind turbine works, and how wind and air pressure help its blades to rotate and generate electricity.

The parts of a wind turbine include its tower, blades, and rotor, but most complex parts are kept in a box behind the blades. There is also a generator, which turns the kinetic energy of the spinning blades into electricity.

The blades of the wind turbine can spin thanks to wind flow and air pressure. The blades have a special shape called ‘aerofoil,’ where the top is curved and the bottom is flat. As strong winds breeze over the blades, it speeds up over the curved top part, flowing faster than the bottom. As the air rushes over the curved top, it stretches out and causes the air pressure to drop. Meanwhile, the air at the bottom has no curves and no pressure changes. With low pressure at the top and higher pressure at the bottom, the blades of the wind turbine are given a little lift!

Scientific concepts covered:

Renewable Energy: Energy and electricity made from resources that nature can replenish, such as wind, sunlight/solar energy, or water. It is environmentally friendly since using it does not pollute the environment or release harmful gases.

Kinetic Energy: The energy of movement – in other words, the energy an object has because of its motion.

High and Low Pressure: The air moving quickly along the curved top of the wind turbine’s blades stretches out, creating a low pressure area since the air spreads further apart. Below the blades, the air stays as they are at their normal speed. So, the pressure below the blade is higher than above the blade, pushing the blades upwards.
