Parent and Teacher Notes

This experiment uses cereal to explain that there are important minerals and vitamins in our food, which we need to eat to stay healthy. By using a magnet, we can extract the iron in our cereal to observe it closely.

Scientific concepts covered:

Minerals and vitamins: Elements found in food which are necessary for our body to function in a healthy way. Examples include calcium in milk, sodium/salt in food, iron, fats, magnesium, potassium, zinc.

Iron filings: Small pieces of iron. Iron is a magnetic mineral found in foods like meat and grains or cereals. It is important because it helps red blood cells carry oxygen around our body.

Magnet: A magnet is a special rock or piece of metal that can attract certain other metals to itself. Iron can be attracted by a magnet, which means it is magnetic.
