Parent and Teacher Notes

This experiment uses paper planes to explore how the shape of an airplane and its wings allows it to glide through the air. Different types of paper planes fly in different ways because of the unique way that air flows around their wings.


Scientific concepts covered:

Aerodynamics: Aerodynamics looks at how air moves in response to objects moving through it (such as an airplane’s wings).

Flight path: The path in the air made by a plane as it flies.

Arc: A shape like the curve of a semicircle.

Lift: The force which counteracts gravity and pushes (or “lifts”) objects up and away from the ground.

Thrust: The force which pushes objects in the direction of motion. For example, when you throw a paper plane, you are giving it thrust which pushes it in the direction it’s thrown.

Dart plane: A long and narrow shaped paper plane with small wings. It is streamlined in shape, allowing air to flow around it instead of smacking into its surface.

Glider plane: A paper plane with wide wings like a hang glider. Its broad wings allow the air to move over and under each wing, letting the plane ascend and fly a great distance.
