Parent and Teacher Notes
This experiment helps your child understand the three different ways light can interact with objects using gummy bears and laser pointers. Light can be reflected, transmitted, or absorbed. Different colours of light also interact with different coloured objects in different ways.
Scientific concepts covered:
Reflect: When light is reflected off an object, it bounces off the object’s surface. It’s like looking into a mirror and being able to see yourself, because light is reflected off the mirror.
Transmit: When light is transmitted through an object, it shines all the way through the object. It’s like looking through a window and being able to see through it.
Absorb: When light is absorbed by an object, we can no longer see the light.
Colours of Light: Sunlight is a combination of all colours in light. When looking at a colour wheel diagram, red and green are opposite colours (also known as complementary colours). That’s why red light is absorbed by the green gummy bear, and green light is absorbed by the red gummy bear.
