Parent andTeacher Notes
This experiment explains the centre of gravity to your child using a leaning tower of balanced books. The books are balanced by placing one book on top of the other, so that it is as far over the edge of the book under it as possible. The reason books can be balanced this way is because balancing just requires their centre of mass to matched with their centre of gravity each time.
Scientific concepts covered:
Centre of mass: The centre of mass is the point where all the mass of an object is concentrated. It is usually right at the middle or centre of the object.
Centre of gravity: The centre of gravity is the point on an object where gravity acts upon it. When the centre of gravity and centre of mass are the same, an object will be balanced!
