Parent and Teacher Notes
This experiment demonstrates osmosis and diffusion to your child by letting them observe and interact with the membrane of an egg. Eggs can allow water and air to move in and out of them, to let the chick growing inside breathe. The membrane inside, which only lets certain things like water and air pass through, is called a semipermeable membrane. Osmosis and diffusion are processes where molecules move from an area of high concentration to low concentration, until the concentration on either side is balanced. In other words, from an area with lots of molecules, to an area with fewer molecules. Osmosis is a special type of diffusion related to the movement of water molecules through a semi-permeable membrane.
Scientific concepts covered:
Concentration: Concentration is how much of a substance is mixed in with another substance. For example, corn syrup and honey have a lot of sugar in them. So, they have a high concentration of sugar molecules. They don’t have much water in them, so they have a low concentration of water molecules.
Semipermeable membrane: A membrane is a thin skin-like layer. Most cells in our body have a membrane. When a membrane is semipermeable, that means it can let some smaller molecules in, but keeps large molecules out. The membrane of the egg lets water in but doesn’t let the yolk flow out.
Acidic: When something is acidic, it has a lot of hydrogen ions in it. The hydrogen can cause chemical reactions with other substances, which dissolves them. This is how vinegar dissolved the calcium carbonate in the eggshell. The bubbles we saw are carbon dioxide bubbles.
