Parent and Teacher Notes

This experiment allows your child to understand friction by showing how friction can be used to lift a bottle of rice with just one pair of chopsticks. The friction between the rice and the chopsticks holds it in place, allowing the bottle to be lifted easily.

Scientific concepts covered:

Friction: Friction is the force that tries to stop two objects from rubbing or sliding against each other. For example, when pushing or pulling heavy objects across the floor. In the experiment, it’s easy to pull the chopsticks out at first because the rice grains and the chopsticks have many air pockets between them, resulting in less friction. After shaking the bottle, the rice grains are pushed closer together. When we pushed the chopsticks in, we could lift the bottle because the friction between the chopsticks and rice grains was enough to hold the chopsticks still.

Force: A force is a push or pull on an object that can make the object stop moving, slow it down, or change the direction it is moving in.
